People in industrialized countries are living longer and, at the same time, there is an increasing shortage of qualified nursing staff. A new research initiative by the Technical University of Munich could remedy this: at the „Geriatronics“ Research Center in Garmisch Partenkirchen, robot assistants aimed at enabling a self-determined life at an advanced age will be developed and tested. This project is made possible by subsidies of the Bavarian ministry of economics as well as by the Leifheit foundation, an endowment of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen municipality that is managed by LongLeif GaPa gGmbH.
The two floors and roughly 700 square meters of the research center will initially be occupied by approximately 15 researchers from the TUM Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM). The „Geriatronics“ Research Center in Garmisch Partenkirchen is an essential component of the first MSRM flagship initiative relating to the future of health care.
