Pinakothek der Moderne: Exhibition AI.Robotik.Design lives on in the net
NEWS, Community |
Robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are current topics that pose great hopes but also challenges to our time and society. A team of researchers led by Prof. Sami Haddadin has designed an exhibition for "Die Neue Sammlung" in the Pinakothek der Moderne that brings the milestones of robotics and AI to life in the sense of an interactive AI laboratory. Launched in 2021, the exhibition attracted tens of thousands of visitors until its last day in March 2023.
Robotics and AI: from emergence to the collectively controlled machine
At the same time, the exhibition focuses on questions about the development of robotics and AI, their context and the design forms associated with them. The exhibition addressed various topics:
1. History of AI from its origins to the present day
Development from the mythical origin of AI in the Golem, via Leonardo da Vinci's automata and Leibniz's calculating machine, to the intelligent robots and algorithms of our present day.
2. The dystopian future vision of AI applications
What can happen if we forget to focus on the benefits for humans when developing AI algorithms? A data-hungry, all-watching digital technology, familiar from dystrophic narratives, would emerge. Concrete examples: Surveillance through facial recognition and personality manipulation. Scenarios can become reality if people and the benefits for people are not placed at the centre of technological development.
3. Connection between man and machine
The basic idea builds on the concept of embodied AI, i.e. AI in the complex body that develops from the model and understanding of the human body and its mind, rather than AI as an approach based purely on data analysis. At the end of this development is a symbiosis of man and machine.
4. Machine collectively controlled by mane
The Collective.Human.Machine was set up in the structure of the large paternoster of the Pinakothek der Moderne. Here, collaborators from all over the world could dial in and together create a seemingly endless work of art that was put to paper by robots in reality. The robots were guided by visitors both on site and via app from outside the exhibition. In this way, AI created an exemplary physical image of the mental state of a society.
For information: Since 2015, contemporary design approaches by international protagonists of design have been on display in the Paternoster Hall of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich as part of "Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum".
