The Munich Urban Colab (MUC) is a co-working space for new forms of cross-sector and interdisciplinary collaboration and opened its doors to innovators on 01.04.2021. MUC hosts the TUM Venture Lab Robotics/AI, one of the many TUM Venture Labs supported by the joint initiative between TUM, UnternehmerTUM, and selected external partners.
TUM Venture Labs aim to strengthen the startup ecosystem and attract more technological capital in the greater Munich area. The initiative offers educational programs, venturing support, and an ecosystem consisting of events, networks, and infrastructure that interdisciplinary teams can use to bring research results and ideas into a viable business venture. One of the many venture labs is the TUM Venture Lab Robotics/AI.
The TUM VL Robotics/AI started with student teams of the educational program Intelligent Machine Design Lab (IMD.L). IMD.L enables TUM master's students to develop and build complex and powerful mechatronic systems with high social and economic relevance. The first challenge that TUM Venture Lab Robotics/AI fed into UTUM Tech Challenge is how to build sensor-based safety systems for eBikes. The topic was motivated by the observation that more than 400 cyclists died in accidents in Germany during 2020.
The TUM VL Robotics/AI is closely related to the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM). Prof. Eckehard Steinbach and Prof. Sami Haddadin, members of the MSRM Board of Directors, are the academic directors of the TUM VL Robotics/AI. MUC is strategically located at Freddie-Mercury-Straße 5. This represents a 3-minute walk from the MSRM premisses in Heßstraße 134 and an 8-minute ride by bike from the TUM main building at Arcisstraße 21.
